Thirty years after Godzilla's first attack on Tokyo, a Japanese ship, the Yahata Maru, is found after being attacked by a giant creature. After a Soviet submarine is also attacked, the Japanese Prime Minister has no choice but to admit that Godzilla is alive. Godzilla emerges in Tokyo, where his attack on a nuclear reactor re-energizes him. Steve Martin, the reporter who survived Godzilla's first attack, is called out of retirement to help in the crisis. The Japanese military is able to knock out Godzilla using the newly-developed Super-X weapon, only to have the fallout from American and Soviet nuclear missiles put him back in action. He is finally lured to a volcano on Oshima island by an experimental transducer, where he falls in, meeting his end.
